SHABBAT on the ISLAND
Were our mouths are full of song as the sea . . .

Experience the vibrancy and richness of Jewish cultural, spiritual and intellectual life.

Join us for speakers, discussions, prayer and meditation, music, singing, good food, and good conversation.

The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center has voted to have the services, as much as possible, fragrance free because of members with allergies.  Please be considerate of people around you by refraining from perfume, aftershave or other strong fragrances.

Services led by
Rabbi Caryn Broitman

ALL ARE WELCOME!

Our services are designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of liberal practices. The congregation is affiliated with
The Union for Reform Judaism and uses a Reconstructionist Shabbat and High Holyday Prayer Book.

Each month we hold a Music Shabbat and pot luck community dinner.

Tuesday Morning Shachrit Services
A group of MVHC members has begun meeting to pray the weekday morning "Shachrit" service on Tuesdays at 7:30 am.  We would love others to join us.  We meet in the MVHC sanctuary or library, and we use the weekday version of Kol Ha Neshamah, which is also the title of the siddur we use for Shabbat and of which we have sufficient copies.  We are member-led.  Please join us!

  • Friday evening Shabat service begins at 5:30 PM (beginning June 1st, summer services begin at 6:00 PM)
  • Saturday morning Torah Sevice begins at 9:30 AMState Beach (beginning January 21, 2012, Saturday morning services begin at 10:00 am until spring)

Guest rabbis/teachers often add to the Saturday morning Torah discussion as part of the service.

SHABBAT BY THE SEA: In the summer, we hold 4 Friday evening services at State Beach

    • State Beach between the 2 bridges at the Camp Jabberwocky parking area.  See Google map

Shabbat: A Different Friday Night

We have instituted a series of Shabbat Services designed to meet the needs of Reform Jews who may not have attended services in quite some time.

This hour long service is designed for those raised in a Classical Reform Jewish tradition with a liberal mix of Hebrew and English prayer.

  • The prayers you know and love will be recited in both Hebrew and English
  • The songs you grew up with will be sung as you knew them and we will have a chance to learn newer melodies being used today

Rabbi Broitman will answer "why" and "how" questions about the changing services and practices of modern Judaism.

And, of course there will be an Oneg Shabbat social gathering afterwoods where the "teaching and learning moments" may continue.
