Intermarriage, Conversion and Identity A Tikkun Leil Shavuoth Study Session Tuesday May 14th 7:30
“Wherever you go I will go . . . . Your people are my people; and your God is my God.”
These are the words of the biblical Ruth to her mother-in-law Naomi. which we chant on the holiday of Shavuoth, coming up on the evening of May 14th and into May 15th. Ruth becomes the model of a non-Jewish woman who marries a Jewish man and chooses (in this case after she is widowed) to become Jewish and adopt the rituals, traditions and beliefs of the Jewish people. For this reason, Shavuoth is often chosen as the holiday to complete and celebrate a conversion.... [read entire article]

Dear Chevre,
I am writing this in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon Bombing. No doubt all of us were deeply affected by the contrast of two diametrically different achievements. The Boston Marathon a celebration of what human beings can majestically achieve versus lamenting the grotesqueness of the bombing’s destruction and horror.
Lives are changed forever following both a marathon run and a bombing in ways at the time are not fully realized nor understood. The runner’s sense of achievement is euphoric and the victims of the bombing have much to overcome if ever. Unfortunately we’ve experienced and witnessed both moments for celebration and those for lamentations in both our personal lives and in the lives of our community near and far....[read entire article here]

Welcome to the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center

The MVHC invites all Islanders, year-round and seasonal residents and vacationers, to participate in its activities. Although we were founded in 1940, our rapid growth to 350 family units has taken place since we moved into our new building in 1996. We have year-round religious, educational, cultural, and social programming. Our services are designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of liberal practices. The congregation considers itself Reform, but uses Reconstructionist Shabbat and High Holiday Prayer Books. Religious school meets on Wednesday afternoon and services are held on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. During the winter months we host monthly soup suppers with live klezmer music. In addition, we have adult education classes and year round cultural programming. We have instituted the MVHC Arts Festival which features music, theatre, dance and films. During the summer months, the MVHC Summer Institute presents films of Jewish interest on Sunday evenings, and a lecture series by prominent visitors on Thursday evenings. All of our programs and events take place in the Harriet B. Freedberg Learning Center unless otherwise noted.
