"Conscious Living/Conscious Aging"

A Study Group for the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center, the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury and the United Methodist Churches of MV

Five Thursdays in March at Noon, beginning March 1
at Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center

[Class size is limited and is filling up fast. Please call the office]
Taught by: Rev. Cathlin Baker, Rabbi Caryn Broitman, and Rev. Vicky Hanjian

"What is it you plan to do with this one wild and precious life?" -- Mary Oliver

This study group is open to people of all ages who are eager to examine their life. Are you middle-aged? Are you living in
the "Third Chapter", ages 50-75, or even the "Fourth Chapter"?
No matter our age, we have an opportunity to find meaning at this time and to grow into the fullness of life.
Together we will read excerpts from Jewish, Christian and secular writing
on living and aging. Through life review questions, we will explore the narrative threads and pivotal moments of our lives.

Proposed texts include:

"Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life" by Richard Rohr
"From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older" by Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
"The Third Chapter: Passion Risk and Adventure in the 25 Years After 50" by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot

Clasical Reform Service

Shabbat: A Different Friday Night

5:30 P.M. Friday -

A Classical Reform Service / every few months

Join Rabbi Caryn Broitman in our continuing series of Shabbat services designed to meet the needs of Reform Jews who may not have attended Friday night services in quite some time. People are still raving about these gatherings!

This hour-long service is designed for those of us raised in a Classical Reform Jewish tradition with a liberal mix of Hebrew and English language prayer and who may now find ourselves lost amidst a sea of changing practices.

The prayers you know and love will be recited in both Hebrew and English. The songs you grew up with will be sung as you knew them and we will have a chance to learn the newer melodies being used today.

Rabbi Broitman will answer our “why” and “how” questions about the changing services and practices of modern Judaism. And, of course there will be an Oneg Shabbat social gathering afterwards where the “teaching and learning moments” may continue.

Congregation Members and Non-Members are warmly welcome.
