About Us

The MVHC invites all Islanders, whether year-round residents or vacationers, to participate in its activities. Although we were founded in 1940, our rapid growth to 350 family units has taken place since we moved into our new building in 1996. We have a full range of year-round activities which are augmented by many additional programs during summer months. The services are designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of liberal practices. The congregation considers itself Reform, but uses a Reconstructionist Shabbat Prayer Book and a Hillel High Holyday Prayer Book.

Religious school normally meets on Wednesday afternoons and services are on either Friday evenings or Saturday mornings. The Summer Institute presents films of Jewish interest, mostly on Sunday evenings, and a lecture series by prominent visitors, usually on Wednesday evenings. There are active social programs throughout the year.

Mission Statement - May 9, 1940

The purpose of this congregation is to promote the enduring and fundamental principles of Judaism on Martha's Vineyard; to enable its members to meet for worship, study and assembly; and to apply the principles of Reform Judaism to the values and conduct of the individual, family and society so as to promote the affinity between Judaism and American democracy.
