As the book of Breishit (Genesis) is coming to a close in our weekly readings, we can see several themes of parenthood that are as poignant and relevant today as they were for the matriarchs and patriarchs of the Torah. read more...

Aquinnah 10 Chilmark 5
I have always been fascinated by words. I take this interest to another level by playing with alternate meanings of words or how road signs can be fun putting in punctuation or taking the words in it’s simplest meanings. I often chuckle when I see a sign on the Island saying Aquinnah 10 Chilmark 5 and then I blurt out to the annoyance of a family member, “Chilmark lost again!” continued...

Welcome to the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center
|
The MVHC invites all Islanders, year-round and seasonal residents and vacationers, to participate in its activities. Although we were founded in 1940, our rapid growth to 350 family units has taken place since we moved into our new building in 1996. We have year-round religious, educational, cultural, and social programming. Our services are designed to appeal to a broad spectrum of liberal practices. The congregation considers itself Reform, but uses Reconstructionist Shabbat and High Holiday Prayer Books. Religious school meets on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and services are Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. During the summer months, the MVHC Summer Institute presents films of Jewish interest on Sunday evenings, and a lecture series by prominent visitors on Thursday evenings. All of our programs and events take place in the Harriet B. Freedberg Learning Center unless otherwise noted.

Members in good standing of the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center may access the membership roster for personal use only. This list may not be used for solicitations or business purposes.
Please call the office for your access codes.

2012 Challenge Appeal
We're working hard to meet our goal of $45,000 for this year's Challenge Campaign (our annual appeal). Whatever you can give to help us meet this goal is deeply appreciated. If you gave last year and can give at the same level this year, we will surely meet the challenge. Every dollar donated will be woth 50% more for the Hebrew Center.
L'DOR VADOR, From Generation to Generation Because the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center is a small congregation, revenues from our annual membership fees only cover a portion of the expenses to run the synagogue. They do not cover all salaries, maintenance of building and grounds, utilities, Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations and many other cultural, educational and spiritual needs. Your continued support through generous contributions help us meet these expenses.
Do a Mitzvah, donate generously

by Evelyne Klein When our (fabulous) Membership Director asked if I would host a Shabbat dinner at our house, as a way to have long-standing members meet new members, I thought: What a terrific idea!! There were so many new members we did not know, and members we saw at temple events only. What better way to bring old and new together, get to know other members better, than around the Shabbat dinner table? I was amazed at the synergies between the old and new members who came: the conversation flowed around the table, with everyone introducing themselves, and topics ranging from the impact of Hillel on college students to training for boards, to activities for disabled youngsters and numerous other topics, both personal and otherwise. The conversation was lively and vigorous the entire evening. When our kids were young, my father would insist we come for Shabbat dinner on [...]

by Craig Parks I am a very rare breed in the Reform Movement. Out of over 900 congregations I am one of the very few full time Directors of Youth Programming that has been in my job over ten years. I have now spoken at my third national Biennial in a row and do so with great fervor. When those attendees come to my presentations and hear about the 60 -70 kids coming to our Teen Shabbat Jam 2 hour Friday night service once a month or our well over 100 9-12 graders participating in our programs such as the social action youth group Tikkun Project, or the summer camp that brings in gobs of kids and teens who work on staff I sometimes have to reach for napkins to wipe the drool off the faces. I can’t even tell you how many times I have heard the phrase “Can [...]
